STORY BRIEF:There are four groups in conflict. The Jaguar Council oversees the jaguar people (shifters). They have assassins who kill enemies and all halflings. Bastian is one of these assassins. Fontaine is the leader of a group of mercenary rogue jaguar shifters. He wants to destroy the Jaguar Council. The Brotherhood are humans with crucifixes who are enemies of some or all jaguar people. Alvarez is a drug lord (human). He has dealings with Fontaine and the Brotherhood. There is a prophecy about a halfling becoming powerful and changing things.
Kira is a halfling (human mother, jaguar shifter father). Her mother kept her in a cage since birth. She escaped at age 14. She has been homeless and wandering for ten years. She is now in Guatemala, following her instincts, hoping to find others like herself. She comes across Fontaine's group. The female in the group attacks Kira, and Kira must fight. Bastian is nearby and comes to Kira's aid. He takes her to a safe place. Because she is a halfling, he should kill her, but he doesn't. She is in heat and needs sex. He provides the sex, but he does not desire her emotionally. The story continues with the different groups trying to catch, harm, or kill Kira and Bastian.
REVIEWER'S OPINION:
There is a lot of action, but I didn't understand why or how many things happened. The author puts us in this potentially interesting world, but doesn't give enough details. Not enough time was spent developing plot and characters. It would have been better to occasionally be in the minds of some of the bad guys. The purpose of the book is sex which I found ok, but for some reason I skimmed parts of the sex scenes. I don't know why. Maybe it was because there wasn't much emotion. He didn't like her but responded to her body being in heat. Another time she was given an aphrodisiac causing a sex scene, but again not much emotion in that. The sex is intense and explicit including rear door activity.
A few of my unanswered questions include the following. What were Bastian's thoughts and motivations? Why didn't he kill her? I wanted the story about Kira's past and her parents. Diego was a bad guy, but at the end his role changed which confused me. Marquette (of the Brotherhood) had been after Kira for years. His motives apparently changed. I think he wanted to kill her at age 14, but later he wanted magic words - which she didn't know until much later. I didn't understand that.

Ms. Brandon drops the reader right into the action for a thrilling roller coaster ride of danger and desire. Kira is a sympathetic heroine who longs to find a place where she's accepted...wanted. But all her life she's been treated horribly. When Kira messes up his opportunity to take out the bad guys, Bastian doesn't want to care about her. Yet something about Kira calls to him. Something more than her jaguar heat.
I loved this story. It was a fast-paced and as hot as the steamy jungles in which it takes place. Kira and Bastian are sympathetic, smart characters. I liked them both and rooted for them the entire way. I'm hoping for more stories in this unique world!
