The gods are back, and they are tearing this world apart

Zeus, Dagon, Loki, Lugh and countless other deities have come back to this earth and rule over their individual districts with no goal other than satiating their own petty desires.
The sole remaining functional province, Hellenica, decides to act. They build the Academy and are about to recruit 16 young gods with the hopes of training them to police this world.

The Horsemen

Of these 16 young gods, four have strange powers that the Academy might not be able to control. Kayana Marx, Gunnar Redstone, Tommy Alderon and Saoirse Frost aren’t like normal gods, and their abilities stem from the Monotheistic times.
But if Hellenica has any hope of holding this world together, they will have to teach these four to exercise their powers to their fullest extent, even if it might bring everything to an apocalyptic end.

City of gods Hellenica eBook Jonathan Maas Patty Smith

Mr. Maas has done an excellent job of retelling the classic myths of our world. From the green island of Ireland to the rising sun of Japan. He brought back a very good chunk of my start into reading mythology.

When I read his sample start, I was immediately hooked. I stayed up long past my normal sleep time to just get a few more minutes in. Sadly, that turned into hours. I was one very tired worker the next day, but his book was well worth the read.

I have to say that this book reminded me very much in some ways the old Incarnation series by Piers Anthony. A world of gods, magic and science blended together from the mundane to the fantastic. And just like Piers Anthony, he makes a world so much like our own, yet twists it with enough magic and fantastic to make you go: Wow, I'd love to visit that place. Maybe not live there, but definitely visit for a very long time.

Maas doesn't delve into WHY the world is the way it is, I suspect that's another story in itself(wink), but makes it blend seamlessly enough that we accept it as the way it has always been. Though there are hints throughout the book and from characters that it wasn't always like that....

Maas hasn't paid me one dime. Look at my review history and you'll see I'm been reading a lot of these new writers, why? Because, sometimes it's good to embrace a new writer on the chance they can bring a bit of magic back into my world. Thank you Maas. You were very entertaining and I will definitely add your names to a short list of writers I'll check on.

Like I've told the other writers: You write. I will buy.

and P.s. You should definitely pay your editor and proofreader a better rate. They did an excellent job. I didn't even notice any grammatical issues. It was smooth....

City of gods Hellenica eBook Jonathan Maas Patty Smith Reviews

This was a very interesting mashup of mythology in a YA style book. Yet, even though it appears to be a YA story, it’s really much more adult oriented. The characters are developed throughout the story and are engaging. Definitely looking forward to trying the rest of the series.
I could not get a clear sense of this world or the motivations of the characters. The geography of this book is confusing and disjointed. I could not determine if this were a planet, plane or other dimensional construct. I’ll pass on the rest of this series.
This book has its ups and downs but since it incorporates every religion including my own I'm very surprised. It has both Greek and Roman mythology as well as many others. Adding the gods of those as human forms and nicely detailed when in the story was a very good idea. I can normally read most books within 24-36 hours. Most time I've spent reading at a time was 18 without doing anything but. I only say that to say that I've never intentionally slowed down reading a book just to draw it out and let my imagination soar with the details and imagine the cities and people as I did with this one. If I could rate it higher, I would. I'd seriously recommend this book to anyone that is open-minded and loves a good story.
A little stilted, the concept is a good one, the plot has it weaknesses. I wish the writing was more mature. The character development is the best part of this book, but stills needs more polish.
I liked the premise of the book but I think it became mired in places. I think I'll read the next one to see if I'll keep going.
This book is very deep and complex. The characters are well developed and very realistic. The plot is a bit dense, but in a good way. You don't spend pages reading about the scenery. This also doesn't give the book a feel of an easy afternoon read. It's deep and rich, more like a heavy meal than a snack.
This novel is worth your time. The characters are individual. I admire the skill that it takes to prevent one personality from infecting the others.(that is not a deal breaker but this author has clearly spent time with these people outside of the story).
Also this is a complete story! Too many times I have been led on a path that just leads to the next installment. Personally I hate that and feel that it is cheap and cheating. Being free to continue in the universe that the author has created is a gift for the reader. I admire that.
I recommend that you take advantage of that gift as well.
